Physical Education

Sports do not build character. They reveal it...

- Heywood Broun

The PE Curriculum team aims to promote, in all students, an understanding and appreciation of the positive benefits of health and physical activity.

Tong held specialist sports college status until the schools’ specialism programme was abolished and this discipline continues to be one of our key strengths, as we continue working towards making the school a centre of Sporting Excellence.

What students gain:

How we teach:

The PE/Performing Arts Zone is a thriving area offering an extensive variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities. The team is made up of nine full time staff members, including a swimming specialist.

We promote the high quality provision of Physical Education at Tong and across the Bradford School Sports Partnership, which is a sustainable sporting framework for primary schools locally.

We have developed local sport partnerships with a varied network of local sports institutions and increased the contribution that they bring to student achievement at Tong High School.

Our partners include the Bradford Bulls, Bradford City FC, Halifax Town Football Club, Bradford Park Avenue, West Bowling Cricket Club, East Bierley Cricket Club, Dudley Hill Rugby League Football Club

Facilities

The sporting facilities are state-of-the-art with a full size, floodlit, 3rd generation astro-turf pitch two floodlit multi-use games areas, which include three full size basketball courts (10 baskets/stands), and four tennis/netball courts.

There is also an extensive grassed area with a rugby pitch and two football pitches.

Further sports fields include an extra rugby pitch, a cricket/athletics area and more training areas. The indoor facilities include a 25m swimming pool, fitness suite (all Techno gym equipment), large sports hall and gymnasium, a dance studio and climbing wall. In addition, there is a designated PE classroom with interactive whiteboard.

In February 2008, Tong was awarded an International Schools Innovation Award by the Youth Sport Trust.

Ofsted Comments:

“The sports specialism contributes well to students’ understanding of how to keep themselves healthy and safe. The impact of this work is shown clearly in the number and range of awards held by the school.”
