Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector

This qualification is designed for pre 16 learners and provides a specialist work-related qualification in a range of skills related to Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing using a mixture of theory and practical based units.

On successful completion of this course, learners can progress onto higher levels of study in this vocational area to gain a qualified status.

The Certificate Course Content

This course consists of units of work each lasting for 30 or 60 hours, spread over 1 or 2 years of study and could cover a wide range of possible skill and application choices.

The assessment of the whole course is assignment and observation based, with no examinations, and is graded at a pass level.

Each unit relates to a particular aspect of the world of work in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing, with many practical tasks. These require individual research using internet, book or real life sources of information as well as hands on experience of a range of skills and students will have contact with experts from these fields.

Much of the evidence submitted is in written form, with students making use of their ICT skills when word processing their assignment essays.  Prior knowledge in many aspects of Science, English and Mathematics will be useful for the successful completion of these units. 

Year 12 NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy

Students at Tong High School are currently following a NVQ Level 2 programme in Beauty Therapy.  This compromises of 10 units of work spread over one year that gives a balance between theory and practical work. 

The course is assessed through on-going reviews and practical assessments, written assignments including external examinations in Beauty Therapy, Anatomy & Physiology and other key skills. 

The practical sessions are vocationally based and performed in a dedicated and specially equipped salon led by a fully qualified Therapist/Teacher. Upon successful completion of all 10 units the students will have a qualified status allowing them to advance into the Beauty Therapy NVQ level 3 programmes or gain employment on cruise liners, health spas, in beauty salons, sports clinics/centres, remedial massage centres or running their own business.

B4       Improve and maintain facial skin condition
B5       Provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments
B6       Remove hair using waxing techniques
B8       Provide Make-up treatment
B34     Threading Services

G20     Health & Safety
G18     Promote additional products or services to clients

G8       Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
