Curriculum Team vision and ethos

We aim to encourage our pupils to be curious about the world around them and to develop a positive and practical approach to learning in Science.

We feel this is best achieved by careful grouping of pupils within lessons and by inspired teaching at the appropriate level.  Tracking students’ progress throughout the year enables us to monitor their performance and take action as and when appropriate.

Curriculum Area description, staffing, resources

There are twelve laboratories. The school has a purpose built farm unit with a classroom, a livestock building, a large pond and several greenhouses. In addition to a curriculum office we have additional learning space which is used flexibly.

The department is staffed by 10 teachers, one of whom is part-time in science and 3 technicians an assistant technician and a curriculum assistant. We have up to 3 teaching assistants who support teaching and learning.

Each area has TV/video. The department has a growing number of digital projectors to match the use of ICT and software in lessons.

Courses offered

The school offers A2 and A/S level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and has achieved good results in recent years.

At Key Stage 4 pupils study OCR GCSE Gateway Science course.  The results for our KS4 courses are good and improving.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils follow the Exploring Science. Years 7 and 8 are taught in mixed ability tutor groups.

Curriculum Area priorities

To continue to build on our recent success of improved A* – C pass rate at GCSE and similarly KS3 SATS results through continuing to strive to improve learning and teaching.
