Team Vision and Ethos

  • The PE Curriculum team aims to promote, in all students, an understanding and appreciation of the positive benefits of health and physical activity
  • All students shall be given the opportunity to experience a broad range of physical activities from which they will develop confidence, experience success and ultimately cultivate life long enjoyment
  • To continue to promote the high quality provision of Physical Education at Tong and across the South Bradford School Sports Partnership
  • To continue to work towards making Tong High School a centre of Sporting Excellence
  • To develop local Sport partnerships in the use of the facility; also increase the contribution that they can bring to student achievement at Tong High School

Curriculum team description, staffing and resources

  • In March 2008 Tong was designated as a Specialist Sports College for the third time
  • In 2007/2008 Tong was awarded Sportsmark (under the new PESSCL criteria)
  • In February 2008, Tong was awarded a National award for the International Schools Innovation Award by the Youth Sport Trust
  • The PE/Performing Arts Zone of school is a thriving area offering copious amounts of extra curricular activities
  • The Curriculum team is made up of 9 full time members of staff including a swimming specialist. The team is led by a Curriculum Leader, Deputy Curriculum Leader and two Assistant Curriculum Leaders. In addition there is a School Sports Coordinator (SSCo) who is released from teaching two days a week
  • The sporting facilities are state of the art with a full size, flood lit, 3rd generation astro-turf, two flood lit multi use games areas (MUGAs), which include 3 full size basketball courts (10 baskets/stands), and 4 tennis courts/netball courts, an extensive grassed area which includes a rugby pitch and two football pitches. In March 2009 this will extend to further sports fields that will include a cricket/athletics area and more sports pitches. The indoor facilities include a 25m swimming pool, fitness suite (all Techno gym equipment and soon to incorporate the ‘wellness system’), large sports hall and gymnasium, a dance studio, and climbing wall. In addition there is a designated PE classroom with interactive whiteboard

Courses offered

KS4

  • Currently being offered in year 10 and 11 we have BTEC First for Sport (Diploma and Certificate) and GCSE PE (both courses follow Edexcel syllabi)
  • The Junior Sports Leaders award (JLA) and Heart Start are offered during core P.E. lessons
  • In addition to JLA, students are also given the opportunity to fulfil officiating courses in Rugby League, Football, and Gymnastics as well as completing the Junior Football Organisers Award (JFO)
  • The curriculum team are also piloting alternative vocational certification which have a fitness/leisure industry bias

KS5

  • Students who have completed the JLA at KS4 will be given the opportunity to complete the CSLA. In addition students will also be offered the opportunity to access the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification as well as the Step Into sport programme
  • Academically the Curriculum area offers the BTEC National Certificate in Sport (Coaching, development and fitness), AS and A2 P.E., BTEC First for Sport Outdoor Education

Core Physical Education programme

All students, Years 7-11 receive 2 hours of high quality P.E. each week

KS3

  • A wide variety of traditional and non-traditional physical activities including football, rugby, swimming, golf, basketball, netball, athletics, rounders, cricket, Health Related Exercise, Outdoor Adventure Activities, movement, baseball and gymnastics

KS4

  • A combination of the development from the KS3 curriculum with trampolining, JLA, Heart start/Life support, and alternative certification

Curriculum enrichment activities

Students have the opportunity to represent the school at a large number of sports/activities including

Boys:
Football, basketball, cricket, rugby league, golf,  American football and table tennis

Girls:
Football, netball, rounders, gymnastics, and dance

In addition to the above students can take part in the following activities:
badminton, fitness, swimming, trampolining, Duke of Edinburgh, climbing, martial arts (mixed), BTEC/GCSE, BTEC Nat/AS/A2

Curriculum Team Goals

  • To sustain and continue to improve attainment across all Key Stages
  • To work successfully as the Specialist subject to raise attainment across the whole school
  • To increase development of the various partnerships (Bradford Bulls, Bradford City FC, Halifax Town Football Club, Bradford Park Avenue, West Bowling Cricket Club, East Bierley Cricket Club, Dudley Hill Rugby League Football Club) to help raise the profile of the School and Curriculum Team
  • To develop the amount and variety of the qualifications on offer to all students and the surrounding community
  • Enhance and expand specialist staffing
