Ten Minute Reading Challenge

Over the past six weeks, we have been running a ‘Ten Minute Reading Challenge’ in the Love to Learn Centre at Tong High School, which has proved very successful and popular with pupils. Pupils who have participated have been reading for ten minutes (or more if they like!) every day and keeping a log of the books they have read and the time they have spent reading them. Our pupils enjoyed the challenge but simultaneously widened their vocabularies and improved their reading and literacy skills, which was the core aim.

An optional addition to the challenge, which several pupils took up, was to write a review of a book they had read as part of the challenge. This provided further development of literacy skills for those who chose to complete and we received some absolutely excellent submissions which pupils had obviously put a lot of effort in to.

We are very proud of all who entered and it was terribly difficult to pick just one winner of the star prize, which was an Amazon Kindle! After much deliberation, however, we were pleased to announce that the winner was Bethany Vickers (RF5) for an incredibly well-written and reflective review which displayed excellent analytical skills.

The Ten Minute Reading Challenge has been a huge success and we would like to thank all pupils for taking part, and hope that they will participate in future events in the Love to Learn Centre!
