Jeans for Genes Day
Next Friday, October 7th is Jeans for Genes day. For a donation of 50p students and staff can wear their jeans to school to raise money for research into genetic disorders. For more info and some resources to use in tutorial please see www.jeansforgenesday.com.
THIS IS NOT A NON UNIFORM DAY, ALL OTHER UNIFORM IS AS NORMAL.
Individually, genetic disorders are rare but together they affect 1 in 25 children born in the UK – that’s more than 30,000 babies each year. Their associated health problems mean that genetic disorders are the biggest killer of children aged 14 years and under.

Year 7 & 11 Parents Evening
Dear Families
On Thursday 29th September, we shall be holding our annual Year 7 Tutor Evening and Year 11 Consultation Evening. This will be an opportunity for you to come in to school and meet your child’s Team Tutor. who will be able to give you an overview of progress that your child has made since the beginning of term.
To avoid too many families arriving at the same time and needing to wait for long periods of time could you please indicate an approximate time period of time on the letter sent home with your child. Your child’s Team Tutor will then confirm an exact time for you.
We have found that these evenings are most effective if adult family members can come along with the students, so that everyone is clear on the best routes to success. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of your attendance at this meeting in order to support your child in succeeding.
We look forward to working with you.

Parent Governor Vacancies at Tong High School
Dear Parents,
There are vacancies for two parent governors on the school’s governing body and I am writing to you to invite nominations for these positions.
Any parent with a child on register at the school is eligible to become a parent governor.
A parent is disqualified from election as a governor of a school if they are an elected member of the LEA or if they work at the school for more than 500 hours in a school year (at the time of election or appointment).
The governing body has considerable responsibility for the school, including:
- setting the aims of the school and agreeing a wide range of policies
- holding the school to account for standards and pupils’ progress
- preparing the annual school budget and monitoring expenditure
- appointing school staff
- ensuring that the school building and other facilities are maintained
- keeping in touch with parents and the local community
It is most important that parents are fully represented and I therefore ask that you give careful consideration to either putting your own name forward as a candidate or to nominating another parent as a candidate, if they are willing to be nominated.
A nomination form is enclosed. Please return it to Mrs H. Tobin, Clerk to Governors, at the school, no later than 2.15 p.m. on Friday 7th October 2011.
If we receive more than two nominations, a ballot will be held so that all parents can choose who will represent them on the governing body.
If you would like to know more about what is expected of a parent governor before making a decision to stand, please do not hesitate to contact either myself on 01274 681455, or School Governor Service on 01274 385629.
Yours sincerely,
Mr S. Curran
Headteacher
