Key Stage 1 Tri Golf Competition

Wednesday 1st February 2012 at Tong High School

It was the turn of the Year 1 and 2 pupils from local primary schools to compete this week, in the ever-popular tri golf competition.

The competition requires competitors to demonstrate their chipping and putting skills in a series of challenges. Challenges in the competition include Bulls Eye, Dominoes, Cliffhanger, Tunnel Ball, Finders Keepers, High Five, Treasure Island, Zone Ball and Three in a row. These activities, derived from the Golf Foundation, are played on a rotation basis with teams all moving according to the central timer. At each station, the competitors take it in turns to contribute points to their team’s score.

Apprentices on the Tong High School and Bradford Bulls Apprenticeship scheme attended to help officiate the event, by manning each station and assisting and explaining each activity to the young competitors.

Children from Ryecroft, Knowleswood, Newhall Park, All Saints, Bankfoot, St Stephens CE and St Matthews CE attended the event.

After two whole rotations around the activities, the scores were in. All Saints A team were crowned the Key Stage 1 Tri Golf champions 2012. Close behind was Newhall Park Primary School. In 3rd position was Ryecroft A team.

St Stephens CE Primary School was awarded the Sportsmanship award. Well done to all the staff and teams who attended!

Sixth Form Basketball Cup Competition

Tuesday 24th January 2012 at Tong High School

As the competition started off, the first game was Tong against Beckfoot. We took an early lead and kept it for the entire first half of the game. However, due to the Tong team being made up of five players and no subs, fatigue set in in the third quarter.

By the end of the 3rd quarter, Beckfoot had piled on the pressure and managed to go 19 points ahead. In the last quarter we pulled out all the stops – battling through the tiredness. However, the experience and well-drilled defence of the opposition meant we could only manage to bring the deposit down to 11.

Beckfoot then went on to play St. Bede’s, which was an extremely well fought game. Throughout, neither team could extend their lead to more than 4 points ahead of the opponent. Beckfoot led the majority of the game but in the 4th quarter St. Bede’s put on their most experienced team – and managed to get their noses ahead by one point. St. Bede’s maintained their one point lead for the remainder of the 4th quarter and went on to beat Beckfoot.

It was then Tong’s turn to play St Bede’s. We stepped up our defence dramatically and, despite being tired, we led the entire game up until the last 3 minutes of the game. I had gained an injury and was struggling to get up and down court with the pace of the game. Unfortunately we went on to lose by 4 points despite a last minute dash to steal the game. St Bede’s won the competition. Their squad was composed of two experienced national league players and an England player.

I would like to thank Mr Baddeley for arranging the competition and coaching us, Aidan R for being the table official, the guys from Bradford Dragons and Bradford Maroons for refereeing and an extra special thank you to Rhianna-Mae L and Micah M for stepping up and playing at a level against players 4 years older than them. A final thank you to everyone who turned up to compete.

Bradford Schools Sport Enterprise – Carnegie Schools Rugby Tournament – Round 2

Castleford Academy vs Tong High School

Year 7

On Thursday 15th December Tong High School’s Year 7 Rugby Team made the trip down the M62 to take on an experienced side Castleford Academy in the 2nd round of the Carnegie Schools Tournament.

Tong started the game well with some powerful running from Daniel, Jordan and Cameron who all tested the Castleford defence. Callum’s excellent defence ensured some early runs from Castleford didn’t gain many metres.

With Tong looking strong Luke took advantage of an unaware Castleford defence and made a darting run from dummy half, unfortunately Luke was the victim of a big tackle from the Castleford team resulting in him having to leave the field, from this point Tong seemed to lose their direction and momentum which allowed Castleford’s experience and skill to push them forward.

A series of tries followed from the Castleford side but Tong kept positive and Tong Full Back Ben ensured a number of Castleford breaks were short lived with a range of superb try saving tackles. Tong trailed at the break 20-0.

The second half didn’t start well for Tong with a testing Castleford kick off that lead to a Tong error; a Castleford player reacted quickly pouncing on the loose ball and followed this up with a powerful run to see Castleford raise the score. Unfortunately Tong saw very little of the ball with Castleford showing their class and following up their strong start with some well-orchestrated tries. Tong’s Captain Sam lead by example throughout the game never giving up with his strong defence and testing runs.”"

A Castleford knock on saw Tong have their first real opportunity of the second half which allowed them to push up field and receive a penalty for a Castleford high tackle. A tremendous run from Daniel saw him push through the opposing defence and taking over several players for what appeared to be a well-deserved consolation try, unfortunately for Tong the referee ruled a knock on.

The game finished 46-0 in favour of a well deserving Castleford side.

Tong’s man of the match was Sam followed closely by Ben , Daniel and Cameron .

Open New Age Kurling

Wednesday 7th December 2011
9.30am @ Tong High School

Tong High School hosted the ever-popular Open New Age Kurling competition last week, with the competition being more successful than ever thanks to the exemplary leadership demonstrated by Tong’s Year 12 BTEC Sport group.

The competition allows young people of a range of ages to compete against each other in a fun and competitive environment. With teams from both Secondary and Primary Schools taking part, the competition proved how good sportsmanship allows young people of all ages to participate together in good spirit.

With eight lanes filling the Sports Hall, Tong’s leaders got to work scoring, leading their lane and guiding their participants. As game by game the teams totted up their points, it was a close competition between the teams.

Children from Bankfoot, Ryecroft, St Stephens, St Matthews, All Saints, Hollingwood, BBEC, Lower Fields, Newhall Park, and Horton Park attended the event.

After a tense final round, BBEC were named as the winners of the Open New Age Kurling, but Ryecroft were close behind.

Coming in both second and third place in the competition, Ryecroft’s pupils were outstanding in their skill throughout the day. Kenya, a pupil at Ryecroft, was also awarded a sportsmanship trophy for showing excellent teamwork skills.

Well done to all of the young people who participated in the event and thank you to all staff who attended.

Bradford Bulls Training Session – Yoga

Tuesday 15th November 2011 @ Tong

As part of the ever-increasing partnership working between Tong High School and Bradford Bulls, the most recent development was for Bradford Bulls to utilise our fantastic facilities (and a member of the PE staff!) for their first team training sessions.

Last week’s trial session saw 27 Bradford Bulls players, including the first team, descend on Tong High School for a Yoga session with Rachael Muir.

Yoga has many physiological benefits which will assist the players in their training. Just some of these include increasing the efficiency of the cardiovascular system, increasing musculoskeletal flexibility and joint range of motion, and also as a method of increasing endurance.

Following last week’s trial session, the Bradford Bulls will now be attending Tong High School for Yoga sessions on a more regular basis as part of their training.

A massive thank you must go to Rachael for her excellent tuition and handle over 27 enthusiastic participants!

U9 Girls Football festival

Wednesday 16th November 2011 @ Tong

It was time for the U9 Girls to show their football skills in last week’s U9 girls’ football competition. Hot on the heels of the U11 competition, the girls taking part showed their competitive spirit, but also excellent sportsmanship throughout.

The competition was run on a round robin basis, meaning the girls had to perform consistently well to win the title.

Leaders from Tong High School helped to run the event, assisting with refereeing, scoring and encouraging the players. Reece and Jamie were outstanding throughout the competition and were exemplary role models for the young players – well done!

The results were as follows:

  • 1st Place: St Columbas
  • 2nd Place: Ryecroft
  • 3rd Place: Hollingwood
  • Joint 4th Place: Marshfield, St Matthews and All Saints

A special mention must go to St Columba’s who were awarded the Spirit of the Games Passion Award – well done!
